BRITISH OLYMPIC APPEAL, WEST MIDLANDS REGION, 1981-84
Before UK Sport was created in 1996 to distribute Lottery funding for our elite sportsmen and sportswomen, our Olympic team was largely funded by a 4-yearly public appeal.
While a trainee solicitor in Birmingham in 1981, I took on the role of Honorary Secretary for the West Midlands branch of the 1984 British Olympic Appeal.
Our region was set what was considered a challenging target of £25,000, and we delivered 5x that.
In addition to administering the region’s appeal, I personally created and ran a sponsored swimming event for all the schoolchildren in the West Midlands, winning support from major sponsors, and working with celebrity sportsmen, David Moorcroft and Adrian Moorhouse.
